NRIC or “National registration identity card”
NRIC (National Registration Identity Card) is the identity document in use in Singapore. The NRIC number is a unique alpha-numeric serial number assigned to the document and is assigned to every Singapore citizen and permanent resident.
NRIC is subjected to PDPA and therefore, it is improper to ask for the NRIC of an individual, subject to certain exemption under PDPA. NRIC should not be retained and must be requested to verify the identity of that individual.
When setting up a company in Singapore, local resident can use their NRIC for incorporation. For foreigners, they will need to provide their passport details during incorporation.
Such documents requested would be used for due diligence purposes and must be kept secure by the service providers to prevent the information from being stolen or breached in an IT environment.
